Cigar Box Guitar Festival

The cigar box guitar is a primitive chordophone that uses an empty cigar box for a resonator. It has been played by blues legends and rock stars for decades!

Cigar Box Guitar Festival: June 15 (Father’s Day Weekend) at Hwy 61 Roadhouse.

11th Anniversary | Established 2013

This Year’s Music Schedule
Saturday, June 15th, 2024, we will have Devin Williams, Travis Bowlin, and Cody & The Chameleons playing from 12-5 pm, and then Ivas John playing from 7-10 pm.

Quick History of the Festival
On June 8, 2013, the first Cigar Box Guitar Festival was held at the Hwy 61 Roadhouse. There was food, music, cigar box guitar players, and builders. In addition, Justin Johnson performed.

Guitar World calls Justin “The Wizard” and says his act is a “must see” so the festival was off to a great start! There was also a special appearance by The Thin Dimes, playing cigar box guitars.

Artists and Official T-Shirt
In addition to music, there are always artists who attend this annual event. Many of the artists are inspired by the music, which is evident in their work. Many people browse and buy art during the Festival.

In addition to artwork, there is always an official t-shirt that celebrates this annual event. People like to collect them and selling t-shirts helps offset the costs associated with the Cigar Box Guiter Festival.

A Tradition of Giving Back
Every year, on Saturday during the Cigar Box Guitar Festival, we hold a raffle to raise money for Six String Heroes. These musicians teach United States veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to play guitar.

In past years, we have raffled off a $50 gift certificate to Hwy 61 Roadhouse, a retro Leinenkugel cooler filled with frosty Leinenkugel beer, and an original work of art by Bruce Toulmin, who often attends the event.
